“When I see a tree, I receive a shock, as if the tree were something that breathed, that talked …” – Joan Miro

Trees have been venerated and mythologized in all cultures throughout the ages. Their ubiquitous nature, and our hurried lifestyle, mean that we often pass them by, quite unconsciously.

My portfolio of 46 images of tree trunks draws attention to the uniqueness of individual trees, elevating them to totemic status. By highlighting fragments of a greater whole, my work depicts different ways of seeing, sanctifying the ordinary by expanding it into a new dimension – the realm of the extraordinary.

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity . . . and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.” – William Blake

My Optimism of Color Blog

Every Tuesday and Friday, I post a photo or piece of art that I’ve created that reflects what I call the Optimism of Color. Through vibrant colors and bold visceral forms, these works shout out my joy at being alive, and my good fortune at being able to continue to make art after surviving five cardiac arrests in 2011.

Each of the images I post brings a smile to my face. I hope they bring you similar joy and laughter through the Optimism of Color.
