My Signs of the Times Video Now On YouTube

Enjoy seeing some colourful eye candy in my 6 minute video featuring a unique collection of vintage and contemporary advertising signs! Whether it’s calling you to see a film or play, promising a delectable meal or an enticing experience, or offering the comfort of a bed for the night, signs beckon.

Some of the signs in this video are painted on brick walls, while for others you need to look up in the air, away from your cell phone to see them. Some are 3-D, some neon, some posters, but all the signs use dazzling colours and bold graphics to entice the viewer.

Advertising everything from sewing machine repairs, car washes, and exotic dancers to hot dogs, ice cream, and beer, these eye-popping signs certainly grabbed my attention. Part of their appeal is that they are not only alluring, but also fun. Many evoke a nostalgia for simpler times. All are ephemeral, so I wanted to document them before they vanish.

I photographed the more than 300 signs in this video in my Hamilton Ontario hometown, in Toronto where I lived for 35 years, and in cities and towns that I visited on my travels. I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it!

My Optimism of Color Blog

Every Tuesday and Friday, I post a photo or piece of art that I’ve created that reflects what I call the Optimism of Color. Through vibrant colors and bold visceral forms, these works shout out my joy at being alive, and my good fortune at being able to continue to make art after surviving five cardiac arrests in 2011.

Each of the images I post brings a smile to my face. I hope they bring you similar joy and laughter through the Optimism of Color.
