Political tension, personal reckoning, and the elemental language of colour converged in Flashpoint Rising, my latest acrylic painting (24×30”).
While I was working on this piece, the world felt perched on a precipice. Everywhere, the atmosphere seemed charged, brittle, one spark away from ignition. That sense of collective crisis found its way into the canvas as a rising surge of fiery orange, pressing upward against a dense, unsettled blue. It’s the moment before something gives way, the instant when pressure becomes transformation.
At the same time, breakthrough was the word echoing in my mind as I painted: the desire to push through old constraints and trust the heat of change rather than fear it. That energy is here too, not as destruction, but as emergence, the beginning of something new.

My Optimism of Color Blog
Every Tuesday and Friday, I post a photo or piece of art that I’ve created that reflects what I call the Optimism of Color. Through vibrant colors and bold visceral forms, these works shout out my joy at being alive, and my good fortune at being able to continue to make art after surviving five cardiac arrests in one night in 2011.
Each of the images I post brings a smile to my face. I hope they bring you similar joy and laughter through the Optimism of Color.
